An avid gardener herself, she credits her green thumb and her appreciation for the great outdoors to her farming family. With a B.A. in Biological Sciences from Smith College and a M.S. in horticulture from Cornell University, Ellen uses her broad-based knowledge of both the consumer and commercial aspects of horticulture to encourage young and old alike to cultivate their green thumbs. Ellen works directly with the commercial greenhouse industry as marketing and communications manager for Pen & Petal, Inc. A former editor for Greenhouse Grower magazine, Ellen now contributes to both consumer and horticultural trade media. She writes the Consumer Buzz column for Green Profit magazine, the Ask the Gardener column in the Boston Globe Magazine, and has contributed pieces for Garden Design magazine, My Home Life magazine, Boston Home & Garden magazine, Boston Globe, People Places & Plants, Today's Garden Center, Greenhouse Management and Production, Greenhouse Product News, among others. Ellen's 6-part series on understanding gardener demographics in a garden retail setting, Gardening Through the Ages, appeared in 2005-2006 issues of Today's Garden Center, and won the 2006 American Society of Business Publication Editors (ASBPE) Central-Southeast Region Gold Award for Feature Series. Ellen also presents lectures and demonstrations on gardening and demographics for both consumers and retailers. Her open, edgy style makes the information entertaining and accessible for all audiences. Her demonstrations' get-your-hands-dirty style are popular and encourage audience involvement and a sense of cameraderie with participants. |
